Complete Guide to SKU Generation and Management

Overview

Yanet Barcode Labels provides tools to configure SKU formats, automatically generate SKUs, manage duplicate SKU rules, and import SKU data for your Shopify products.
This guide covers the available SKU settings, SKU generation methods, format customization, and importing SKU data.

Step 1: Configure General SKU Settings

  1. Go to Yanet: Barcode Labels → Settings → SKU.
  2. Configure the following options:
  • Auto generate SKU after create new product – Enable this option to automatically generate an SKU when creating a new product.
  • Allow the same SKU for variants of the same product – Allow variants of the same product to share an SKU when the configured rules produce the same value.
  • Allow the same SKU as variants of other products – Allow a generated SKU to be saved even if another product already uses it.

Note: When duplicate SKU options are disabled, duplicate SKUs are skipped according to the app's rules.

Step 2: Customize the SKU Format

Configure the components used to build your SKUs.

2.1. Configure Prefix, Suffix, and Numbering
  • SKU Prefix – Add a prefix to generated SKUs.
  • SKU Suffix – Add a suffix to generated SKUs.
  • Auto Number Start From – Set the starting number for automatic numbering.
  • Use delimiters – Specify the separator between SKU components.
2.2. Include Product Information

Use the available fields to customize the SKU based on product information:

  • Product title – Configure how the product title contributes to the SKU.
  • Product vendor – Include the product vendor.
  • Product type – Include the product type.
  • Product category – Include the product category.
2.3. Include Variant Options

Configure Option 1 value, Option 2 value, and Option 3 value to determine how variant option values contribute to the SKU.
You can enable Hide option 1, Hide option 2, or Hide option 3 to exclude the corresponding option from the SKU format.

2.4. Arrange the SKU Layout

Use the Layout controls to arrange the available components, including Title, Type, Option1, Option2, Option3, Vendor, and AutoNumber.
Check the SKU preview to see how the configured components appear in the generated format.

2.5. Configure Uppercase and Metafields
  • Enable Use UPPERCASE letters for fields that cannot be entered directly to use uppercase letters for applicable fields.
  • Under Use metafields, select the relevant option and click Click to setup to configure metafields when needed.

Tip: Finalize your SKU format and check the preview before generating SKUs for multiple products.

Step 3: Generate SKUs for Existing Products

  1. Go to Yanet: Barcode Labels → Generate & Print.
  2. Under Select method to generate barcode, select Only Generate SKU.
  3. Click Choose Products and select the products or variants you want to process.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete SKU generation.

Review the generated SKUs to ensure they follow your configured format.

Step 4: Generate Barcodes and Print Labels

If you need to create barcode labels as well as SKUs:

  1. Open Generate & Print.
  2. Select Generate Barcode & Print Labels.
  3. Choose the products or variants you want to process.
  4. Select the appropriate label template and follow the remaining on-screen instructions.

Use this workflow when you need to generate barcode information and print labels together.

Step 5: Import SKU Data

Use Import Barcodes & SKUs to work with barcode and SKU data through the app's import feature.

  1. Go to Yanet: Barcode Labels → Import Barcodes & SKUs.
  2. Review the available import options and file requirements.
  3. Prepare your product data according to the required format.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to import the data.
  5. Check the affected products in Shopify to verify the imported SKU values.

Note: Confirm the supported file format, required columns, and whether the import workflow creates or updates SKU values before publishing detailed import instructions.

Step 6: Understand Duplicate SKU Handling

The app provides two settings that control duplicate SKU behavior:

  • Allow the same SKU for variants of the same product controls whether variants belonging to the same product can share an SKU.
  • Allow the same SKU as variants of other products controls whether a generated SKU can be saved when another product already uses it.

Review these settings before generating SKUs in bulk, especially if your store requires unique SKUs for inventory management.

Step 7: Troubleshoot SKU Generation

If an SKU is missing or differs from your expected format, check the following:

  • SKU not generated automatically: Verify that Auto generate SKU after create new product is enabled.
  • SKU skipped: Review the duplicate SKU settings and check whether the generated value already exists.
  • SKU format is incorrect: Review the prefix, suffix, delimiter, layout, numbering, product information, and variant option settings.
  • Variant information is missing: Check the selected option values and whether the corresponding product data is available.
  • Metafield values are missing: Review the metafield configuration and the data associated with the product.
  • Imported SKU is incorrect: Verify the import data and check the affected product in Shopify.

If the issue persists, contact our support team and provide an example product, its expected SKU, and the actual result.
